Winning streaks always feel good

regardless of the opposition. Also, it gives the kids confidence that cannot be obtained any other way.

I HATE LOSING

I HATE IT

and that’s all that’s happened recently, so why blog about it?

Coach’s diary: Game 8

Change is in the winds…we lost but the guys played hard for the whole game. The head coach did not show up (the reason why is unclear at the moment but he was helping out the varsity on the bench when we got back), so myself and the other assistant took the reigns. A talented guard who was supposedly academically ineligible isn’t anymore (confusion on whether he actually was in the first place), and he helped us a great deal tonight despite showing rust and lack of conditioning. I don’t know what the future holds or where we’re going to go from here, or even who’s going coach the next game, but I can say that despite taking another loss, this one didn’t hurt as much.

Coach’s diary: Game 7

Lost to a very crappy team with really only one decent player. No hustle or desire in the team right now, it’s getting to be embarrassing to watch. Been out of answers for a while but now gamedays are depressing.

Coach’s diary: Game 6

These are the times that try men’s souls. It turns out, getting blown out every game starts to wear on you. The level of opposition is about to take a drop, but without effort out there on the court, it won’t matter.

Coach’s diary: Game 5

There are no positives to take from getting embarrassed, and it doesn’t make for anything I want to write about. Onto the next game.

Coach’s diary: Game 4

Once again, I don’t like writing about losses. This team had a couple of inches on every single one of players, and we’re down 2 starters/key players for the whole year (academics, promoted to varsity). We came out swinging defensively but struggled to score. Ended the half on a good note, leading 21-20. After that, the game started to get away from us, and they used their depth and size to extend the lead. I saw a lot of effort out there but unfortunately it mattered little in the result, as we lost 58-32. An even tougher game on Saturday awaits us.

Coach’s diary: Game 3

I don’t like writing about losses so I’ll keep this one short. The team was up against a big public school, and they played scared in the first quarter. A 10 point deficit was pretty much held at that throughout the game. They managed to cut it down to 5 as time expired, but it was too little, too late. I had this one down as a loss before the game but based on the quality of the opposition it was more winnable than I had thought. Oh well.

Coach’s diary: Game 2

I can already tell this is going to be an up and down year, and we haven’t even lost a game yet. But the performance tonight simply would not have been good enough against better opposition. I knew things were going to go our way when I filled out their lineup in our books and they only had 6 players, one of which fouled out in the 2nd half. We were down 26-24 at the half but I had a feeling the other team was bound to run out of gas in the 4th, and I was right. The game continued to be close until the 4th, when we opened up a 10 point lead we would not concede. A 54-44 win is not something you want to brag about, but certainly something to build a season on.

Coach’s diary: Game 1

A new segment to my tumblr…hope you like it.

Usually as a coach you’re able to gauge how a team is going to come out in the first half of a game by the week of practice beforehand. With Thanksgiving break in the way, this was a little more difficult, but it was still clear to me yesterday that the boys were not quite ready for a game yet, and it showed. The opposition had one player worth a damn, and he got his points in the first half. We made an adjustment to deny him the ball and he pretty much mentally checked out for much of the rest of the game. It was a back and forth game till the end, and a couple questionable foul calls kept the other team in it and they managed to tie the score at the end, sending it to OT. More back and forth action in the overtime period and they hit the back end of 2 FTs to take the lead 56-55 with 10 seconds left. Our shooting guard, who was forced into point duty due to 2 of our guards fouling out, took the ball and charged towards the basket, but at the last second found one of our players under the basket with no one under him and laid it in to take the lead with about 1.5 sec left. By the time they attempted an inbound, the game was over, and a happy mob surrounded the kid who had laid it in.

In reality, that team was not very good outside of that speedy guard. We are a fairly small team, but will need to play better on both ends of the court if we want to have a successful season. But hey, I’ll take the win, 1-0 on the season.
